AI Mentor for Computer Science Students

Every pointer you actually understand today is one less segfault tomorrow.

A BSc student asks Sumantrak

“explain the difference between malloc() and calloc() in C”

malloc() allocates a single block of memory with uninitialized garbage values, while calloc() allocates multiple blocks and initializes every byte to zero. Viva tip: examiners always ask why calloc() is technically slower — it's because zeroing every byte costs extra CPU cycles that malloc() skips, so use malloc() when you're going to overwrite the memory yourself anyway.
